A person must hold a TDLR license to perform or offer to perform electrical work or residential appliance installation, unless an exemption in Section 1305.003 applies (Occupations Code 1305.151). A state license is valid anywhere in Texas; a city electrician license is only good inside that city. (source: Texas Legislature)

A residential appliance installer license covers appliance installation. A Residential Appliance Installation Contractor must be or employ a Residential Appliance Installer of Record, and an electrical contractor must be or employ a Master Electrician of Record. Penalties

Breaking the electrician licensing law is a Class C misdemeanor (Occupations Code 1305.303). (source: Texas Legislature)

Check an electrician or residential appliance installer in the TDLR license database by name or license number, or call TDLR Customer Service at (512) 463-6599 or 800-803-9202 (Texas only). File complaints through TDLR's online complaint process or call the Enforcement Division at (512) 539-5600. If your city has its own electrician licensing program, TDLR says to contact that city first. (source: Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation)
